Go get'em, Agatha! This reminds of the last panel on this page: www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20071005Plus this from TVTropes Girl Genius, under Beware the Nice Ones: "She really is a very nice, pleasant, easy-going girl. Until she goes to The Madness Place or you hurt or threaten one of her friends. Then the Death Ray comes out." I like the "Invasion Sale" sign. These shopkeepers don't miss an opportunity.

I find it interesting that Krosp did not get knocked out by the doom bell. Is it because he is not human or is it for some other reason? At first I thought maybe it was sparks that didn't get knocked out but than I realized that would be rather ineffective as a weapon. And when we saw several sparks pass out I realized for sure it did affect them. So now I am pondering on just what makes it so certain people pass out and others do not. We already know that the " dead" are unaffected so just how does this bell work? We know that the Jäger's are not affected by the bell. So there is the possibility that it attacks certain parts of the brain and unless said parts are sufficiently strong enough (or sufficiently different enough) the bell would overload them and they would pass out? Now if it is done that way I have to wonder if something near Mechanicsburg helps pass on this "change/strengthening". I suppose that maybe the Heterodynes could have a genetic predisposition towards whatever this immunity is and than maybe the townsfolk picked up something from the remaining dyne water which could indicate that the water is not quite as benign as once suspected (unless of course it is a closely guarded secret, that way their enemies would not be able to acquire the water as away to build an immunity. Now if it is something along that line it would stand to reason that Klaus would know about it and would have built an immunity into Gil. But once again this will all remain speculation until further facts have been presented forward.

In Gil's case, it could be argued that his immunity to the Doom Bell is the sincerity and depth of his love for Agatha. The sound induces the feeling of your own impending death. But to Gil, it signaled that the woman he loves still lives, something he places above his own existence. Agatha's life is more important to Gil than his own, something apparently picked up on by Mamma Gkika.
As for Krosp, maybe it doesn't affect animals. Or it just affected one of his nine lives (he is a cat, after all). Or he just recovered quickly. We'll never know.
The Jägerkin aren't affected because they don't fear death. The Bell to them means the Heterodyne is back which is cause for celebration. Anyone who drank the Jägerdraught wouldn't fear dying or they wouldn't have asked for it. The Jägers made the transformation at that stage of young male existance where the individual is convinced he is immortal already. No old man would do this.

I doubt cats would be impacted much, they are after all lords of all they behold and princes of creation. The rest of us are just here so that things dont get boring.

I hope Agatha keeps Krosp in nice coats. A Napoleonic great coat suits him so.
I wonder if the process of dying imparts protection against the effects of the Doom Bell.

I wonder if the process of dying imparts protection against the effects of the Doom Bell. That possibility had crossed my mind but you will note that a majority of the town is still up. Also Gil didn't "die" like Agatha and Tarvek did so that still wouldn't explain his not passing out.

I wonder if Castle Wulfenbach is sound proof, it was last shown hovering over the city but seems to have entirely dodged the Doombell effects, despite the remote Helioluxers getting blasted.

I think it's just one of those "for the sake of the plot" things that Castle Wulfenbach was not affected. It just makes telling the story easier. Same goes for Othar. We don't actually know if he and/or Tarvek were affected by or even heard the Bell. It's not really important to the plot.
