Mebbe. She dun see de sun dot offen... or effer?? My guess was that it's makeup or some similar deliberate application of cosmetics--like the laugh she's working on! That said, your theory is definitely the cooler one, at least if the explanation of why she doesn't see the sun are sufficiently interesting (I have a character with such a reason from the one GG fanfic idea I've ever fleshed out much, so I've got one in mind...)

That's pretty standard for a pulp-action hero; I see no reason a pulp-action heroine should be immune. See the careers of Tarzan of the Apes, Indiana Jones, Allan Quatermain or John Carter of Mars for examples.
