Brother Ulm isn't speaking with a stereotypical Irish accent (as done by Americans). Instead of "Surely the Lady Heterodyne sleeps...", it would be "Surely now, ...". And "What a fine thing ..." would be "Now 'tis a fine thing, ...". The phrasing resembles what one thinks of as Irish, but it also fits his being a monk.

I tink it is supposed to be; de whole "sure and my own family..." is a uniquely Irish construction, not a "monkish" von (dou dat first beet does sound rather "monkish"). Startingk mit "sure and" is not standard English in any other part of de world.

Brother Ulm just makes me think of monks in B grade Hollywood period pieces. It's a formal, passive voice phrasing.

Hy am no expert on de monk speech, but if he vere usink de Irish speech den he vould say zumtink like "Sure and me own family...", hy believe. I Hy am a linguist by trainink (tho not expert in de Irish dialect, or de Irish-Gaelic language), und hy am pretty sure dot dere's two ways to say it: von is like hyu said, de oder is sometink like "muy," which might also be represented as "my." Dot's my theory und hy'm stickink to it! Olso, de fact dot it's "De Wyrm of Limerick," a city in Ireland, kind of suggests dot he might be Irish. Along vit de reddish hair. Ov cause, this discussion vill probably be moot tomorrow, seeink as any more conversation might show his true accent, von vay or de oder...
