Chances are Kiong survived. It's only a little boom and he's a Bear that is not only huge, but scares Jagers. So I wouldn't be so surprised if next page we see that he jumped on Ulm to take the blast.
Or if the Professors want to go the humor route, they could probably get away with just an ash face and some singeing.

Vell, iv ve hef dealt vit de beast, mebbe know ve remembers vhy ve iz in diz mess in de fust place, Tveedle lokink vor Lady Selnikov / key / buk und den ve can gets on the journey to Paris. Or iz dot de next volume? We're only on page 27, I don't know exactly how many pages go into a volume but I doubt we're more than half way, maybe a lot less. My guess it that the next volume will open in Paris, and before that we will deal with the get away, Gil showing up, figuring out at least some of the Book, what happened to the key, Dimo, Martellus, as well as possibly a scene at the very end where Gil returns to Castle Wulfenbach (possibly with Agatha's left behind gear because he's like that), and we get some insight on what Vole and Higgs have been up to while all this was happening. (I'm betting Higgs had a few words with Vole, on the benefits of keeping his mouth shut on a couple of things.) If we're really lucky we'll even get some pages on Higgs talking with Vole. I'm also hoping Higgs gets a hold of Zeetha's lost hat. I'm a shipper what can I say.Though I have to admit, i think I might be in a minority in thinking that this last volume hasn't been badly paced. Then again I didn't think the Castle arcs were badly paced either so I might just be bad at spotting such things.

I'm just wondering if there is a point to all this business with the Beast. The arc has, so far, returned van Rijn's notes to Agatha and shown Krosp his true purpose. My guess is that the "key" is hidden in the notes which is what the extra pages are about. The added pages are blank and have a cutout space for the key.
After all this, does the Beast serve some purpose to advancing the story? We've spent a fair amout of time fighting it.
I'm also speculating that the pacing is going to pick up as we get closer to the end. Think of a roller coaster - we've reached the top of the big hill.

Hmm, possible plot point in this arc include:
1. Krosp getting his bears 2. And the whole key and book, which brings the Storm King plot back into the story, as long with the muses 3. Giving time to showcase Martellus' abilities 4. The forced alliance with the monks, it might not be signed this very moment, but i'm sure as soon as this fight is over their going to do their best to get it signed. This could cause a problem later. 5. Agatha may now have transportation, which is good because she can no longer use the Monks because of above point. 6. Perhaps magnetism is going to be important to the next challenge Agatha faces, or similar the way the Train's brain is designed might be useful. 7. It's a good way of getting Gil, Agatha, and Martellus is a small area together, which is going to lead to something. perhaps this is how Agatha learns about Klaus in Gil. 8. The Train must know some things about the Hetrodynes, or at least Agatha's Grandfather. We might get some exposition on that.
Most of these are just guess' at this point but their possibilities.
