Ten brownie points that Brother Ulm's "Better place" is as the brain of the new train. who will then escort Agatha to Paris as thanks, (and maybe as an apology) before working for the Monks. If only because I highly doubt that the monks would be that excited if it was The Beast's brain in their.
Also The Abbot is sneaky, telling all true information in a way that can both be misleading without him getting trouble if he get's caught. He mentions Lady Selnikov and the agent who started all this without making it oblivious they are the same person, but if Gil or whoever dose catch on he can shrug and say "I thought that was obvious." He's also manged to talk about the old Heterodyne monster without mentioning that it's a train.
No idea about Koing though, he's much bigger and was further away from the explosion so he might still be around.

Vot could possibly go wrong? Pshaw, that's not half as many as in Castle Heterodyne, when the sparks... destroyed an entire fleet and curbstomped five armies and made death rays and there were riots and crazy monsters and disasters both natural and unnatural and...and... Oh, this gonna be *good* (chuckles and rubs hands together). Hy Tink you folks wer onto zometing in da odder thread... Hy'll bet dis new train ken lay its own rails, use ennytink for fuel, und most importantly defend itself against disruptions. Sorry Gil, hyu're gonna heff ta wait a bit longer for da qvality kissy time mit der mistress... She's gonna smash right through yer blockade.

Hy vas likink Brudder Ulm too. Note dot der Abbott implies dot Lady Selinkov might not be in a goot place. OK, I just want to state that the Foglios like to make jokes. My feeling is the whole story is a sort-of joke -it's a "Heterodyne Story" - get it? The Abbott is making a veiled joke about where Lady Selinkov will be spending eternity. Brother Ulm is dead. Sorry, I liked the character but he is dead as is Lady Selnikov. But... "Brother Ulm, at least will certainly be in a better place" (as the Abbot looks skyward). No mention of the other casuality. AND... There are much bigger fish to fry in this plot at this point in the story. Agatha, her weasel, Gil, Klaus-in-Gil, Martellus, Krosp and his Swartzwalders, Count Wolkerstoffer, Zeetha, and Violetta are all in one place. A much bigger explosion that the Beast is just waiting to happen. Then again, who knows? I admit that Ulm as the the conscience of the new locomotive is interesting. I just don't think it happened as I don't think the Abbott's comment has deeper meaning than it's face value. To me, it's an unspoken comment about Lady Selnikov, who mostly set up the attack on the railroad, shot and killed one monk, kneecapped another, before releasing the Beast and getting killed herself.

I figured he took it off because it was metal, and I felt he came off as Konig as well. You could be right as well though. As for Ulm i didn't take the "In a better place now" as my proof or anything. It was just something that was going around before is several places that Ulm would take over the train, and it would explain why the monks would be okay with a new train from a Hetrodyne, one of their own is behind the engine.

The main thing that's making me think otherwise is the fact that they jumped ahead immediately after the explosion, without showing us the body. I mean, something bad happened to him (obviously, he was in the epicenter of the explosion), but that seems quite suspicious to me. Not sure if him becoming a Mccaffrey-style brainship is the answer, but no doubt we'll see in the next half-dozen pages or so.

I'm still holding out for a return of Princess Anevka. Not the Lucrezia-Anevka either, the original personality that Tarvek stored away on a shelf after he stopped her from killing Agatha.

I'm still holding out for a return of Princess Anevka. Not the Lucrezia-Anevka either, the original personality that Tarvek stored away on a shelf after he stopped her from killing Agatha. I think this is rather likely, in one form or another. Not only did he carefully hide away Anevka's head, he also went out of his way to make sure Lucrezia-Anevka would consider the brain container important enough to keep. The safest placed for it would be having Lucrezia think it's important. I think, that maybe eventually, Tarvek might not only work on Agatha and Gil, but also her. She did survive (if briefly) a Lucrezia download, so it's pretty safe to say that Lucrezia, or at least part of her is messing around in her brain, and that's likely what made her go mad. And while the brain is brain dead, being in that box probably means it is still on life support. Tarvek might have been studying brain transfers long before Agatha showed up, and that's why he knows so much. She's been dead for a long time but Tarvek should have access to Gil who is considered really good at reviving people, so I think it's a possibility. Granted we have no idea where the brain container disappeared to between Stumhulten and the Great Hospital. It could have been destroyed for all we know.
