"Science is like a river - they can't get you for ever"? Doesn't make sense.

"Science is like a river - they can't get you for ever"? Doesn't make sense. "- it can't be contained forever." has been suggested as a better translation. Google translate isn't particularly accurate.

I'm not using Google translate. I did Latin O-level... and that is terrible Latin. Sorry, Professors!

On Facebook, someone pointed out that the Professors appear to have used Google translate to create the Latin.
“Knowledge is like a river: you cannot contain it forever.”
If you plug the second phrase inbto Google translate, you get the exact Latin in the comic.

Aha, right! That'd do it.
Machine translation can be quite useful if you already know the language and you just, for example, run across an unfamiliar word; but, used on its own, it is full of pitfalls for the unwary. I recently came across someone on DeviantArt who was a native Russian speaker and clearly had no English at all. On the face of it, he was apologising for small pieces of pineapple. I doubt very much that that was what he really meant.

But eef hu types dot latin into der Google translate hu don't get der proper english. Iz a vun vay translation (und a bad vun at dot). I zee dot mizz Violetta haz been gifen der dutie of being der vun to say de obvious tings (hu know, like "Dey are shooting at us", "he's pushed der button", ud "Ve have stopped."), iz an important role i iz beink told.

A better translation would be: Scientia sicut flumen est. Capere in perpetuum non possibile est. Though a bit stilted, perhaps.

Mon cornet acoustique a êté frappé par un éclair. My trumpet was broken by a cream cake? :-) I scraped a French O' level in 1977 and then dropped the subject like a hot brick.
