Posting the comic of the day!
Step one - Create Thread
The create thread button is located at the top-right
Step two - Get the image address from the Girl Genius site
Open a new tab, window or even browser, your choice, and go to: www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php
Once you see the latest comic right click on it and select the option that allows you to Copy Image Address
Different browsers call this different things. This is what it looks like in Opera, but most (all?) browsers allow you to do this though the exact words used might be different. It should be easy to figure out how to do it, and if not you can always install Opera 12.18 (notink newer deserves to be kalled Opera und schould be killed vith fire!). What? No I'm not partial at all...
Step three - Hosting the image
Now you have to host the image somewhere. We do this as a curtsy to Phil and Kaja. So far they haven't objected to us posting their comic here, and we try to make sure there is no undue hotlinking to their servers. There are many image hosts out there, some working better than others, and some easier to use than others. I'm going to suggest you use imgur.com as it's quick and easy, doesn't require that you register, has been stable for many years, and plays nice with just about all browsers. The one thing imgur requires to work is that java script is enabled.
Two hosts I know are finicky and doesn't always work with all browsers are tinypic.com and photobucket. If you use these it's not guaranteed that everyone will be able to see the pictures posted.
So here is my instructions for imgur.com
Go to: imgur.com/
If it's your first time there or if you haven't change preferences you will end up on the page for The Most Viral images on the Internet, sorted by popularity
This is perfectly fine for our intended use.
To host the image all you have to do is paste the link you copied in the previous stage. You can do this directly on the front page, you don't have to klick any button or link, though there is a button called "New Post" but you don't really need to use it.
The easiest way to paste the link (on a PC at least) is to press Ctrl+V. The page will automatically update to show the uploaded picture.
On this page you can now manage the image. Decide to make it public by posting it to the user posts, delete it if it was the wrong picture or add more pictures. None of this is necessary, but unless you are a registered Imgurian and logged in this is your last chance to delete the post. I'm going to assume that you got the right image address in the copy buffer so everything is now good to go.
What you now need to do is get the share link for the image. When hovering over the image a menu pops up in the top-right of it.
Hover you pointer over the downward pointing arrow and a menu drops down.
Chose "Get share links" and you get some new choices. The link you want is called "BBCode (Forums)"
Copy this link by pressing the copy button or by clicking on the link text to mark it and copy that, and that's really all you have to do on imgur.
Step four - Creating the link, I
Yep you read that right, we are going to create a link and use the image hosted on imgur. This is done to make it easy for people to find the correct page on the GG site if they want to start reading from there. This is not required! If you don't feel like going through this you can just paste in the code you copied from imgur, enter a subject and click the Create post button at the bottom and call it done. But if you feel like going the extra mile you can follow the instructions below.
Start by switching back to the Jägerkin forum and the new post you started in step one. Now you click on the link icon.
A dialog will open
Paste the BBCode link that you should have in the copy buffer into the Text area.
Time to get the address to the current GG page.
Step four - Creating the link, II
Switch over to the current GG page. Now we are going to jump through some hoops just to get the direct link to this comic.
Start by pressing the button to go one page back in the comic, then press the button to go one page forward in the comic. Don't use the back button in the browser, this only works if you use the buttons on the page.
Now you should have a url in the address bar that looks something like this:
You may have some extra characters in the url that makes it look a bit like this:
That's perfectly fine, but you can safely delete that hash and everything after it. This is just a tag used by the GG site to track advertising clicks, or at least that's what I think it is. Delete it or leave it, I'll leave that up to you.
Whatever the case you want to copy that url, with or without the extra session tracking tag.
Step four - Creating the link, III
Switch back to Jägerkin and the new post you are creating. The link dialog should still be open. Click in the URL field and paste the GG comic url here.
Press the Create link button and the code to display the image hosted at imgur and to use it as a link to the same comic on the GG site will have been generated.
Important info!!!
Step four - Creating the link, IV
OK, so now you've got the comic hosted, displaying in the post and working as a link to the comic on the GG site. You can let it go there and you're not likely to hear any complaints. However a bit of extra code can make it even better. This is entirely optional and if you want to skip it go directly to Step five.
Still here? Excellent!
You now want to add the following to the link tag: title="Girl Genius - Friday, April 28, 2017"
The date is going to change with the comic posted of course, and the easiest way to get it right is to switch over to the GG site and copy the date from the top or the bottom of the page. Do it right and the code will look like shown below.
Note that the dates in the GG link and the title tag matches.
So now you wonder why you should bother with this. Well I'm glad you asked! This image should explain it all...
Notice anything? Yep what you wrote in the title tag will display as a label when you hover over the comic. Purely cosmetic but nice.
Step five - Finishing up and publishing the post
All that remains to do is to enter a subject title and publish the post. Usually I try to find something said in the current page that is funny, weird, interesting or just strange, preferably all of these at the same time. Onomatopoeias are perfectly fine to use if they are distinctive and makes it funny. I suggest that you avoid making something up as long as there is any text on the page that you can use, but rule of funny always win!
Don't forget to add the date to the subject line as it's the only way it's possible to find a certain comic and it's comments. There is no official date format specified for this, but it's preferable that you use one that's common instead of devising your own unique version.
You can also add you own comments under the image if you feel like it, or you may want to save those for a separate post. Do as you like and remember that you can always go back and edit the post if you makes a mistake.
You may want to check that the code works as intended before clicking the Create Thread button. You do this by switching to the Preview mode. Note that switching to preview and back to BBCode mode will modify the code slightly by adding some attributes to the image tags. This is perfectly normal and doesn't really make any difference to how it is rendered.
Once you've pressed the Create Thread button and have checked that the post is looking as you intended you can go ahead and close imgur and any other resource you no longer need. Note that once you've closed imgur you can no longer delete the image you hosted there unless you are an imgurian and uploaded it to your account. Personally I don't think it's much of a problem, but if it's an issue for you it isn't hard to register.
