Tarvek IS NOT GAY! Ok, he's not an testosterone soaked animal he-man into ultimate fighting and ripping women's clothes off, but that does not make him a "poofter".
He's a Romantic Victorian Gentleman (at least, he's bought into the program). His approach to women is different than most men. He suppresses the sexual part and accents the emotional and intellectual. Yeah, it's a 'feminine' behavior but he ain't gay.

Tarvek is metrosexual. He likes his women to be at least as well turned out as he is. It wouldn't do for the Evil Dark Lord's frau to be a schlump.

Exactly - he's an aesthete. He loves beauty in all forms, and that includes sartorial style. What I find interesting is that Violetta is assuming that Agatha is the type to go for "dark lord" types. Isn't a Heroine's usual response to a dark lord "conquer", not "ravish"?

I reacted a bit sharply but this whole "Tarvek is gay" and "Violetta is a lesbian" talk that has, in the past, surfaced in various user groups and fan sites bothers me. I just don't see it and don't see why people draw that conclusion so quickly in what is a PG-13 comic. I am relieved to see the rest of the responses. Tarvek IS a dandy and an aesthete, but he is heterosexual as well as metrosexual. As Violetta points out in the first panel: www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20090311

How does the comic being PG-13 have anything to do with the presence/lack of LGBT characters? Does having a gay person in something automatically make it R? I mean, my headcanon has Zeetha as probably bi, and law of numbers states that there was probably a gay student or two aboard Castle Wulfenbach...
That said, I think Tarvek is probably mostly straight (ie, he might be open to a M-F-M threesome at some point, but wouldn't normally seek out male sexual companions), and definitely metrosexual. Besides, in a lot of eras, that sort of thing was encouraged among the higher classes.
I have no idea where anyone is getting the "Violetta is a lesbian" thing, but now my brain has started wondering what would happen if she and Snaug had some alone time together, and it's not an unpleasant image.
It would be nice to see an out LGBT character in Girl Genius, but it could be that the Foglios have decided that sexuality isn't mentioned unless it's relevant (which I am 100% okay with).

I reacted a bit sharply but this whole "Tarvek is gay" and "Violetta is a lesbian" talk that has, in the past, surfaced in various user groups and fan sites bothers me. Meh. People say the craziest things. I have no idea where anyone is getting the "Violetta is a lesbian" thing.... I betcha it's based purely on her appearance. She has short hair, so she's obviously "boyish." Likewise, Tarvek has a ponytail and glasses, so he's "girlish." Give some people the slightest hint of such things, they'll run with it. They're just talking about what interests them and/or displeases them.

Short hair is boyish? *rolls eyes* Her hair isn't that short, anyway. My hair's about the same length, and I see girls with much shorter hair on a daily basis. *sighs* And Tarvek is more bishounen than girlish, something I personally enjoy (*looks at sketch of Tarvek in a frilly dress and sighs happily*)
Just shows no fandom is free of crazies, even such a well-educated and erudite fandom as that of Girl Genius

I'm not anti-gay, I'm bothered by how fast some fans tag a character as gay with the slightest evidence. PG-13 will use implied sex, but, Good Grief Charlie Brown, how long did it take Agatha and Gil to actually kiss? And,serious, it was just a kiss. All clothing stayed put. They're more passionate in General Khrizhan's imagination. www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20110318Tarvek strikes me as a Victorian Gentleman. He is of a different time. He reads poetry to his ladies to woo them. Metro-sexual is really a very modern term. "Dandy" or even "Fop" might be more era appropriate. But he is all male in his orientation. I got ticked off when Violetta grabbed Agatha when the Castle dumped the cistern on them and, on other sites, males were talking about "girl-on-girl action" and "Violetta has eyes for Agatha". The joke was on Tarvek and Gil who barely saved themselves. It's not about clearly acknowledged gay or straight characters. It's about reading into them what they are clearly not.
