So it’s an Opera? A Space Opera? A Sci-Fi Space Opera? About Military types? Mercenaries to be Precise. So why is it called Schlock?
Schlock Mercenary has to be one of my favourite online comics. The art is good, but not pretty. It’s pretty straight forward, down the line, as-you-would-expect-it type stuff. So what’s the deal then?
The storyline.
There are some beautiful comics out there, but few have the addictive, intellectual stories that Howard Taylor weaves throughout Schlock Mercenary. He’s funny too. He takes humour with a pinch of current events and throws it all into the future. Yet it’s always so relevant to the present. And it’s a Daily. There are also annual events, like Schlocktoberfest throughout the run up to Hallowe’en where we get a refreshing burst of dark humour.
The story runs through several arcs named Books, and is split into various themed parts. The main storyline follows Captain Kaff Tagon and his band of mercenaries through their meandering adventures. Be warned though. Taylor is not afraid to kill any character no matter how important or integral to the plot they may seem. It may seem haphazard, but don’t be fooled. Taylor holds fast to a strict plot line, and there are twists and turns that may not appear until months later when the hapless fan suddenly clues in and much ‘aaaah yessing’ ensues.
Howard Taylor not only involves current events or the social condition in his stories, but often likes to poke fun at popular science fiction with many a hidden in-joke.
All in all, it’s addictive, funny, and clean family fun. What else would I be checking first when I go on the internet?
The comic has a couple of forums. One on Keen another on Nightstar. They're pretty hard going though as many of the members seem to be very intelligent. There's some fun and games to be had though, and the initiation process involves being given your very own (useless) weapon.
Howard understands the need for an artist to get an income. After all he's given up his job in the computing industry to do this comic full time. If you like the comic you can donate by Paypal, buy some Schlock merchandise, or perhaps purchase some original art at one of the many conventions he attends. He also rents out advertising space to other sites vetted by himself. Now that's real targeted advertising!
Buy Schlockware
And if you want more? Well there's the frequent Open Letters that appear below the strip, and Howard's own LiveJournal for your perusal.
